Why Everyone Needs a Will — Even If You Don’t Have Many Assets

Many people assume they don’t need a will because they don’t own much, are unmarried, or don’t have children. But the truth is, a will is an essential legal document for everyone. Without a will, New York’s intestacy laws determine who inherits your property — and the result may not reflect your wishes.

A properly executed will lets you choose your beneficiaries, name guardians for your children, and appoint someone you trust to handle your estate. It also helps reduce confusion, delays, and potential family conflicts. Even if you have modest assets, a will gives you control and peace of mind.

Wills are especially important for single adults, blended families, and those with specific distribution wishes (e.g., charitable gifts, stepchildren, or non-relatives). Don’t leave these decisions up to the courts. A simple will is an affordable way to make sure your wishes are honored and your loved ones are protected.
